Would like to hear comments about experiences of those of you who have started up own business or have had their own business for some time.

Seriously thinking about starting up on own completing EICR's soleley.

Particulary with regard recording date and programmes used.

Why just doing EICR's ??? Seriouslly don't understand that one little bit.

Do you just have the testing quals then im guessing because why would you remove yourself from every other aspect of the trade? I literally don't understand.

Just go self employed as an electrician fullstop. No point removing yourself from other aspects of the trade if you've got the skills, you've gotta take what you can get in this dog-eat-dog industry.

To be fair I enjoy doing EICR's (if given time to do the job properly), maybe I may get bored of it over time but as im stll learning (been doing them for 3+ years) I still find it interesting.

Solely want to stick to EICR's at first as start up costs seem relatively low and registartion to a governing body is not required (or so im led to believe?). May look into remedials off the back of testing (board changes etc..)

Which you will need to be registered to do if in England or Wales

Another daft question. What level of PI should you have? NIC has thrown in 75k with my PL insurance. Is that enough or should I be looking to up it?

Just my two-penneth but i've been on my own almost consistently since i was fourteen and specialisation is the death of the sole trader unless extremely unique. You do not want to start flying by fitting a tiny pair of wings. That said,good luck in what you decide.

I think you would struggle to earn a living on periodic inspection and testing alone. You might be better off asking established sole traders on this site what percentage of their trade is EICR testing to see if your idea is viable or not.
I'm out as I haven't been going long enough to give you meaningful info before you ask.

How you going to get the work?
Do you have someone to pass it to you, cos if you have to find it yourself you'll end up a salesman. Trouble is most of that work i get comes through people I do other work first. What you looking at domestic commercial etc?

Im on my own and making a steady income. However id say only 2% of my business is EICR. Now I am listed on all my advertising as doing these however only a very small of my income is from this.. Now i find it hard to believe somone starting from scratch can build up a big enough customer list purely doing these in order to make enough to make a decent wage from..

That is just my opinion though
