I have no electrical experience, no wiring, no testing etc (I only learnt what colour which wire was what 2 weeks ago) Anyways, Ive passed Part P and 17th edition after being put on a two week course due to unemployment. Question is, What are my best bets now to get some `hands on `experience? Night school? apprenticeship? etc

This has to be I wind up right? If not this shows why those Part P courses must be shut down!

Its a bit like your driving test ,past the test then start to learn ,Wrong way of doing it realy , you have said you have just passed your 17th edition , and please dont take this the wrong way but its not realy what you needed to do , you should have gone to a college and learnt the basics and worked up from there till you get to the 17th edition and then even on to the 2391, realy the only advise i can give you is write to as many electrical contractors as you can sign into a college for a day release course so you can learn the basics in the practicle , and move on from their ,the trade is struggling at the moment , but be positive .in all honesty quick courses just dont work

Cheers for that, I know the quick courses dont work, but thought if the course was free...Why not. Im just asking what the next steps were.

Go to the college and see whats available some of the courses you have to be in the trade , but as ive said try electrical contractors see if any ones taking on , it may have been a free course but its not realy got you very far , i hate to be negative , but in this trade you have to start at the bottom of the ladder and work up no point joining the ladder half way up as your bound to fall off , im realy sorry i cant offer you any more advice than what i have

I'd be interested to know where you did these courses as the majority of training centres won't let you on the 'Part P' course without at least some experience in testing & installations so you must've done something prior to starting that course.

Llite Training centre in Sheffield. No, Ive had no previous experience in any electrical work.

Joihnny-G your living in a dream world mate, You got the cash your on the course!
Colleges/training centres get payed for bums on seats. With a college as long as the person attends 80% of the time they get payed from the goverment if they pass or not!
Iv done my part Pee and im afraid it teaches Joe Bloggs enough to go out and think hes Mr spark. You are walked threw it all. All the bob the builders are jumping on it because they all moan about how much they get charged for a shower supply. And before the Part Pee war starts. Yes its not a Qual, But the builder Regs are and there biult into the course.
And the govnering bodys are more then happy to take these people on there books and let them sign stuff off(limited scope). So not all the blame lays with the short courses!

There's till a lot of investment to be made to sign up with a scheme provider. Insurance, books, 17th edition, Fee, Test equipment. How do you get around the catch 22 of needing to show test certificates for work done, but you can't do the work without being on a scheme? do you notify the jobs, get building control to sign it off, and you show these certificates? If that's the case, then add building control fees on top of the list too.

zzzgdap....

I don't blame you atall for taking these courses if they were offered to you for free.

And, if you have no electrical experience, like you say, then bloody well done on passing them!

Your success in these 2 courses will show any prospective employer that you are serious about getting into this type of work (they don't need to know the courses were for free).

Next step is to get your local phone book and start ringing around.

I trully wish you luck.

All the best.

PS.....go see what other course you can get for free whilst your in a position to do so...Portable Appliance Testing, PV installation, First aid, Health and safety courses, CSCS. (If you don't ask and hassle you don't get).
