after all the recent nonsense topics , i'd like to start a more considered thread

Illuminated direction signs ( green running man ) fixed to the wall leading towards exits , should they be maintained or non-maintained ?

let the forum decide lol.

Would also have to consider how the public use the building I.E school hall or retail store would hold a lot of people at the same time and also the possibility of the occupants being unfamiliar with a defined escape route so maintained fittings would be a viable option to clearly indicate the exit. Whereas an office tends to be used by people familiar with a defined route which may not necessitate the use of a constantly lit fitting.

i find that usually that the maintained fittings that run 24/7 either have burnt out or totally failed lamps that never get fixed so in an actual emergency the light wont even work !

owner would have the duty of repairs & testing so cant let that influence the design really but a valid point still.

your totally right, just from experience i see that "some" owners and companies don't get the proper maintenance needed.

I'd be opting for LED lighting too, less failures and little maintenance. Nice, bright, cheaper to run and not much more to buy too in a standard fitting.

Every public building and school we have done over the years has been maintained on all fire exit doors...But every project was requested as such on the specification issued. So the risk assement and fire stratergy must state what is required here.

IMO they should be maintained.

Illuminated at all times means that the sign it visible all of the time in all situations.
