Hi all, a local electrician has installed a bulkhead light, the wires go in through holes in the fitting, there is no "gland" as we have on other fittings, just 2 small open holes through which the cables pass, I have queried this as being a way for insects and potentially moisture to enter the fitting, also the coloured inner parts of the wires are exposed and the copper of the earth wire is visible. I clean around the fitting with a brush on a metal handle (as most broom handles are these days).
The electrician says its fine, and I am being unreasonable to query the installation and I should get a different brush to dust with.
Am I being unreasonable?

No you are not unreasonable, an awful job, how much in labour did he charge? get him back if possible and re install properly

Hi guys, thanks very much for your quick responses, he is adamant it doesn't need changing, are there any regs I could quote to have a last crack at him doing it properly before I move on and pay someone else.

Ask him about the IP rating of the installation ( IP, Ingress Protection) not sure of the Regulation number, but it's clearly a rubbish install and he should be ashamed of himself clearly not a competent Electrician. The only Ref I have eyes on is Appendix L ODG On site Guide Page 207 and Guidance note 1 Selection and Erection

I often wonder if people like this know their work is utter carp

or wether this fella went home thinking it was right good pukka job

did he stand back and say wow what a beautiful job that was with all the cable hanging out and a big hole in the side...

I reckon he knew it wasn't right but just wanted to get it done as quick as he could.

Take the cash and run you mean Mate????

looks to me like the light is a replacement. if so you can't blame him for the conduit and trunking. he could have just got a bigger light and made the cable entries compliant.
