Our new washing machine came with a power cable that is not long enough to reach the power socket which has been installed under the kitchen sink (that's where it was when we first moved in.)

I called Indesit and they told me they come like that because regulations state that the power socket should be directly behind the appliance.

What's the best thing to do? Is there a cheap but safe/legal solution where I wouldn't have to get a new power socket installed behind the washing machine?

Cutting a plug off does not invalidate your statutory warranty. Amy company trying this argument is in the wrong.

And one thing to consider - if the plug on a ÂŁ1000 fridge freezer gets damaged, do you just scrap the whole thing. No, you fit a replacement plug. Same if you need to thread a cable through a drilled hole.

Get a grip.

OP hasnt responded yet, i hope he wasnt home alone with his choc blocks.

and his trusted screw driver.....

You seriously perform a PAT on a washing machine? While agree they can be moved, they aren't, in the strictest sense, portable appliances.
Seeing as PATis no longer the correct phraseology, its Now In service Testing and Inspection of Electrical Equipment ISTIEE it doesn't have to be portable to be tested, Portable, Transportable, fixed are all now considered testable, you might want to read the CoP.

not relevant. the term PAT test is a misnomer. just to dumb it down for the uneducated. ISITEE covers all appliances connected to an installation by means of a plug/socket or FCU. see ISITEE code of practice. you'll see from the first page a pic of hungry washing machines just waiting to be tested.
