Hi, I would like your advice please.

I have purchased a LED External light for the front of my house along with a PIR sensor. I would like to connect this via the PIR sensor as well as have a manual over ride where I can either have the light on/off. So if I have 2 switches, one for the pir sensor and the other for the manual on/off.

Is this possible? if so please let me know how to configure so I can explain this to my Electrician.

Also, for the rear, I have 3 up/down lights that I would like to be setup the same way as the front where I have option to have pir or manual on/off.

Thanks

follow maufactures instruction data with the lamps... would be easiest..... but it will tell you permenant live for sensor and switched live the, some you can click the switch fedw times fast and this keeps on permanebt

Hi, thanks for the quickly reply.

I though this was the case. 1 live to the switch then light and the second switch to the pir sensor and then the light.

Is this the basic setup? Will ask the Electrician to confirm after looking at the light setup.

It all depends on what you are installing, and what you want to achieve.
If you are installing a separate light and separate PIR, it is quite usuall to use the PIR instead of a switch.
However this will mean that even in the day time, the light will come on when the PIR is activated.
Some units incorporate a PIR with the light.
These can be wired with a switch so the light can be switched off during the day.
Often by quickly switching the switch on, off then on again, the PIR function can be over ridden.
This is not a function that you would expect with a separate light and separate PIR.
With a separate light and separate PIR, you would have to install a switch that would bypass the PIR, this could entail the use of a double gang switch, one to turn on the light and PIR, the other to by pass the PIR.

I installed a light with built in pir and day/night sensor few weeks ago, cheap one,ÂŁ8 quid.. Was working fine when i left it, but now it just stays on constant...... Have this ever happened to any of yous before, isit a duff light, coulkd water of got in and duffed it, any expieriece ...

Been switched into manual override I should think, try isolating it for about one minute then turning it back on without any activity around it (or cover the sensor) leave for another minute then test it to see if it then works normally.
Some PIRs have very different requirements about how they switch; turning off on waiting testing leaving who can guess without the instructions!

The Dawn to Dusk sensor is set to the wrong threshold, so the light unit believes the ambient light level is very low, effectively permanently dark (So light stays ON). Or less likely, the light has been inadvertently toggled (usually OFF-ON and OFF-ON again in <3s) in to, the Dusk-Dawn sensor bypass, permanently ON mode, and has not been later switched OFF for long enough (usually 30s) to reset to normal Dusk-Dawn controlled mode.

i find the easiest way is to feed a 3core/E to the PIR. black/blue as perm.L/N and brown as a S/L from a manual switch to override the PIR. then the PIR will operate the light after dark and the manual switch will operate it independently of the PIR. i prefert his way against the rather hit and miss method of flicking the switch on/off/on/off.

I=P/U, as previuos posts, your fitting has probably gone into manual mode. drop the power for a minute then switch back on. should revert to auto. if not , take it back to B&Q and pay twice as much for a decent fitting

I have a setup with: two Smiths SL077 PIRs, two Lights, and the ability to switch the lights on/off (over-riding the PIR) from a light switch in the hall. I want to replace one of the SL077's but I see that they have 5 terminals inside (labelled L, SL, E, L, and N).

Two questions, please:
1) Please could you recommend a good 5 terminal PIR as a replacement?
2) If I buy a 4 terminal PIR, and given the wiring is already there for a 5-terminal setup, is it possible to wire the 4 terminal PIR so that it acts as a PIR and can be over-ridden by the switch in the house?

Thanks

Hi Tony - sorry, my mistake. I didn't want to start a new thread if there wa something similar already on the system and this was the nearest I found. I wasn't even even looking at the dates. Again, sorry.

If it's possible to replace the PIR directly then I would probably do it myself, yes. My brother was a sparks and 20-odd years ago he and I rewired my house, then had an independent NIC/EIC inspection to sign it off.

If it's more complicated then I'd get a professional in.

My brother contracted chronic rhumatoid arthritis 15 years ago, and had to pack it in. He suggested coming to this forum as he admits his knowledge is out of date, and said the guys on here are really helpful.

That will work fine as long as the Pirs use relay switching, some don't.
