Hi guys just wondered if the following is acceptable. My customer wants me to run power to his shed from his garage. I fitted the CU in the main house and his garage and all is tested and covered by RCD's however the ground between the two out buildings is concreted and he doesn't want to dig it up to run the SWA that I would usually use. I advised we can go above but he doesn't like the idea of this. Now the third option is to go between the two buildings using some pond flex or similar clipped to the bottom of the garden fence. I've had a brief look it he regs and OSG but I can't find anything to say I shouldn't do this but I just haven't in the past and would like your thoughts on it? Ill take a deeper look tomorrow after work but any suggestions would help. Thanks guys.

PS that shed of course ipad made it she'd

Yeah I agree SWA would be better. Trouble is customer has got pond flex and has been doing his own reading and so far the only regs I have quoted him is the any cable or fixture should be suitable for purpose. His argument is that it's visible and unlikely to get damaged. Guess I'm gonna have to lay the law down if he wants me to sign it off.

doing his own reading has he? well he might as well do it himself then! sounds like a job i wouldn't want to get anyway

Remind your customer the flex will carry a voltage that can kill and just because the flex is on show and unlikely to be damaged is not a good argument it needs to resist damage in the unlikely event it does incur damage.

PS ask him why he wants a competent qualified electrician to carry out the work ..... i would assume to ensure the job is done correctly and safely.

How about you having the aptitude to go figure yourself as I was taught the basics and then had to learn myself but then again no doubt you are a part of the why bark when you have a dog mentality at least try and gather some info then come back and ask a question. The only person you are cheating is yourself and please don't reply with egos I just don't have one as I am happy to help but just will not tolerate lazy fools

Geez your a fun character. I searched the forum to find the answer to my question and if you werent so lazy you would have just done the same in an attempt to prove me wrong. If you look, the question I have asked is not in the forum so I ask it myself. Asking questions is part of the learning process. So thanks to the guys who helped by discussing this with me and giving their opinion. May I suggest you find another pastime other than actually taking the time to try and publicly assassinate people on line that are simply trying to find out information to better themselves. No I'm not going to mention egos as its quite obvious that plenty of people have commented in the past about your ego or you wouldn't be so paranoid about it. Ha ha people like you make me laugh. Lazy fool? Whatever mate! And how exactly am I cheating myself? You been drinking or smoking something you shouldn't? Awe bless!

SWA and only on fence if it is in good condition and sturdy ... its in an environment prone to damage and been knocked a bit over its service life....

Customer don't want this
Customer don't want that..... be careful the cart doesn't lead the horse here ... tell him the option and if he doesn't like tell as a professional you are required to do the job correctly and neither options you give he wants so say you can't do the work and ask him to contact an electrician who will give a lower standard short term fix if he wants other options...

Flex across a fence is poor workmanship and not protected from its environment.

Agree fully.
I think this is one of those situations where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and you need to tell him not ask him how its going to be done.
My reply in these situations is usually its my way or the high way.

I risk a ban here, but what a nob you are!
you come here to ask a question that has been discussed many a time on here, and even if it hadn't been, you as a competent electrician should have no trouble in carrying out this job.
the last thing you should be doing, especially since you're new is insulting any members, and especially well respected ones like oldtimer.
sure fire ticket to loserville matey.

Listen Bullet Brain please feel free to keep that up cos your avatar has got it right ie you need to wear a ski mask.

shh OP. just shh!
there are literally hundreds of posts on the very thing you are asking.
the bottom line is- If you are an electrician and qualified to carry out the works, then you should not need to ask such a simple question.
if you are in any doubt, you perhaps should advise your customer you do not have the experience necessary to do the job and advise they find someone competent.

sound harsh? tuff. it's kinda meant to tbh. I am not the only one fed up of crud posts such as this.between sheds and spam links recently I'm so close to stopping coming on here.

Thats utter rubbish. I looked and there is no question even coming close. I am a fully qualified electrician and able to notify my work. I know the proper way to do this and was simply looking for a regulation to quote to a difficult know it all customer. May I suggest you do come off here. Useful people who actually want to use the site for its intended use should be members here. Not small minded, bored people with no lives to live should leave.
