hi all,
i plan to put an outside 13A socket and some lights out on my decking. the lights i want to buy are the type you have to wire in permanently.
can both of these be fed from one fused switched spur from my kitchen? or will i need two?
many thanks

provided your kitchen sockets are rcd protected you could run the socket off the one fused switched sprur and then spur off the out side spcket to fuse down to the ratings of your outside lights. simple stuff

i was hoping i could do this, thanks !
just out of curiosity though, isn;t this a spur from a spur?
apologies, i am in the process of learning....

so, whats the best way to achieve this and satisfy the regs?
Can't you just put a double outdoor socket of the spur and plug the lights into the socket and change the fuse in the plug top to 3 A.Try and use some flexi conduit to protect the cable to the lights

You can install a 13A switched spur (which you already have by the sounds of it) to feed an outside socket outlet.

You can then spur from the outside socket to another 13A switched spur for the lights.

Job done.

hmm, this spur on a spur thing has got me confused -
is this arrangement ok simply because the rating will go down for the lights and the demand is always going to
be the same?
e.g, if it wasn;t lights on the spur but another 13A socket that wouldn't be ok?

exactly which way of doing this keeps the regs out of the bin?

Hi mate,

As far as I know the regs state that a fused spur can feed a number of

socket outlets/ lighting but is dependent on the load - so calculate

what you are going to be running, apply diversity, and see if it works

out :)

here's a link for some ammendments of the regs:
IEE Wiring Regulations updates - The IET
the top link right under the words 17th edition gets you
the 'corregendum' and in this is an awesome diagram
which shows you very clearly what you can and cannot do
with regards to spurs. they are figures 15A and 15B.

and just for those who are looking for a quick answer heres
a picture of fig 15A for ring circuits.

Have a look in the regs page 362

These are examples of what is allowed.

What we have suggested is perfectly acceptable.

Yeh, that's straight out the back of the regs.

The reason I mentioned calculating your load first is that you haven't mentioned what the socket

is going to be used for or how powerful your lights are going to be.

e.g. if you're going to run a couple of 2 Kw patio heaters off the socket then you might be best running

two seperate spurs -

also, keep in mind (ii) in your diagram, as you are talking about your kitchen ring, which is quite

heavily loaded at the best of times

A spur ofa ring circuit to a fused spur then to another fused spur is ok, the fuse in each fused spur protects the latter part of the spur etc. (Remember disconnection times and max Zs tho and part p regs etc etc)
