So is a cpc required in an installation/circuit that relies on double or reinforced insulation for both basic and fault protection?

:)

Good question. :) Depends whether it's under effective supervision or not:

Relevant regs: section 412, specifically 412.1.3 and 412.2.3.2.

I was wondering about the protective measure of electrical separation. Let's say for argument's sake, limited to the supply of one item of current-using equipment supplied from one unearthed source with simple separation (413.1.2). Reg 413.3.5 seems to imply that no CPC is needed. I'm not sure what value a CPC would have where electrical separation is used as the method of fault protection.

If you're looking for the reg that says you have to run a CPC everywhere*, then have a butchers at 411.3.1.1 <--- EDIT: I see this was answered in the time it took me to write all this. :)

* almost everywhere. Lampholders having no exposed-conductive-part hold a special place in our hearts...

Thanks Steve. That is what I was looking for. I guess it is only worded like that in the guidance note. I could not find that written in BS7671.

Yeah, the guidance notes reword it in summat more akin to English. The pictures are useful, too. From the regs, you wouldn't know what (in practical terms) the difference between SELV, PELV and FELV is. All it takes is 3 drawings of the transformers, and you're like, "Aaaaah! Right! Got it." :)
