Can someone "sum up" the requirements regarding hole-cutting a 100mm vent for an extractor fan in a soffit board which probably contains asbestos please.
If the customer is happy not to have the waste removed from their premises, then would any rules be broken by simply cutting the hole (provided precautions are met to avoid breathing any dust) ?
Value your opinions.

Asbestos left untouched is supposedly safe
Breaking it up has risks
Sawing or cutting it without precautions is ikely suicide, then murder.in either order

I know of a company where their sparks drilled asbestos covered joists, there was mayhem afterwards
All the furnishings and clothing being dumped and having to be replaced was one of the minor consequences

No doubt.I have drilled cut or worked with asbestos many times over many years, but would I knowingly do so now that the dangers are so evident,no way

Don't disturb the stuff unless its properly tested

I cut a small hole about 10mm x 10mm in a ceiling the other day whilst replacing an extractor fan for a friend. He watched me cut the hole and then informed me that the ceiling contains a small amount of asbestos (thanks mate). Should i be worried ? I suppose i was nieve towards asbestos because i normally work on new builds. Live and learn i suppose !

There's different types of asbestos... some 'one fibre one cancer' types, and some that seem less harmful. I'd say no reason to worry. But every reason to use dust control whenever you cut, no matter what you cut.

Asbestos takes many years to have effect: one reason it really should be just older people (50's, 60's) doing asbestos work.
