Fan Fuse

P

Pinto Baz

I have just been given a periodic test report with a code 4 fault: Bathroom fan not fused at 3A. The fan is fed from the lighting circuit which is supplied via a 6a MCB. Does anyone fuse down fans fed from lighting circuits? Does anyone make a triple pole fan isolator with double pole fusing for timer fans?

It's only a code 4 so I will ignore it, just it's a new one on me!

When I started this thread I thought the guy that did the report was being a bit over the top but now I am convinced that I have been doing wrong. I usually work on my own but have done some sub-contact work for several electrical firms over the year and from what I remember they have been doing the same. I had assumed that fans were designed to run on lighting circuits and somehow forgot to give the instructions a proper thorough reading. I have now checked several fan instruction booklet PDFs from the Internet and found that every one of that sample have asked for a 3A fuse. I will be fusing down any fans that I fit in the future. Bit of a pain though, especially next time someone wants a broken down fan replacing quick. I bet it won't have a fuse already.

we have been fitting spur with 3A fuse for about a year after last niceic inspection when nic guy told me about fire in a timer fan, we install double appliance box spur one side 3 pole fan isolator on other. easy on new job or if attic above existing not so on g.f. or flat roof jobs. not sure if 3A fuse may blow before 6/5A mcb under some conditions.

these fan manufacturers stipulate a 3A fuse but are unable to make a simple fan suitable for taking a 1.0mm 3core+cpc cable.or standardize on which corner of the fan the cable entry is on. i despair!!!
