been wiring up fans and fan speed controllers today in a commercial kitchen, from the speed controller ther is a 4 core cable up to fan isolator switch then 4 core to the fan ( brown, black and grey + cpc) is there a specific order in which these cable should go in the connections, coloured tape on any? thanks in advance got them wired but the lad i was with wasnt sure on colour orders.

generally brown and black would be lives with grey as neutral. they should be sleeved accordingly.

yeah thats the way i figured, just the wiring diagrams had different letters varying from u, uz, u1 and u2 for example on the different items, just out of curiosity why two lives? might sound a stupid question i know.

one might be permanent, or could be 2 different voltages fed depending on the controller.

yeah that did go though my mind a think all the equipment was german perhaps, problem was my company were only fitting the fans and speed controllers we had not originally ran in all the wiring, but it worked out okay in the end.

Are you talking about ceiling fans for keeping the customers cool or extract canopy hood type fans?

there were 2 fans, one was an extraction fan for the canopy and the other which was slightly smaller as and air in fan, both wall mounted,

Just wired a couple of fans for a commercial set up. One intake one extract. Is that the fourth live core a thermal cut out that will feed back to the controller if the need arises and therefore turn off the fan until reset? The ones I wired had two extra lives for thermal cut out.

thats what there normaly is the tk or tb if i remember rightly, however this was just a totally strange setup there was no connection for this thermal cutout,

Are the motors single or three phase? Do the motors have any capacitors associated with them?

On my fans and controllers they had 2 x extra connections, labelled TK on controller and TB on fan, both were for thermal cut out!

I'm familiar with many domestic extractor fans which are primarily class 2 (double insulated) and consequently are not required to be earthed...
