fault finding procedure.

i'm in my 3rd year of college and i have 2 exams coming up. 1st one is fault finding on a rigged up fault board. the 2nd is inspecting and testing on a rig. i'm not in the trade at the moment as we've got no work and will have no time to practise fault finding before my exam.my class has 22 people and only 7 rigs to practise on once a week so needless to say i'm not overly confident or really know what i'm doing.is there a typical fault finding procedure you would go through every time? such as block testing straight away etc.
