A TDR meter would be ideal as the LCD screen would not only show where the fault is in terms of distance, but would also show how many joints existed in the circuit (a socket connection would be considered a joint) The TDR meter would also indicate if the fault was high or low resistance.
TDR meters are used extensivly is the communications industry and they are not cheap.
