been asked to fit some outside wall lights in a back garden, looked a c/u just wylex plug in mcb,s, there is already 1 outside light in the back garden being fed from a fcu from within the kitchen about 6inch from ceiling, is it ok to replace this existing fcu with a rcd fcu and then use this for the new lights or would i have to put a rcd at the origin to protect all the circuit which the original fcu is coming off, obviously i will be testing the circuit first to make sure disc times can be met etc cheers

do your new lights require RCD?

as of yet they havn't picked any, but they are going on an outside wall which are not out of reach, with there being no rcd protection at all i would of thought it safer to fit a fcu rcd

if the cables aren't buried <50mm deep in walls, there's no requirement to fit RCD protection to lights fitted on the outside of a building.

Is the existing FCU fed from a lighting circuit or a power circuit?? If fed from a lighting circuit i hope they don't choose ''some'' 500W halogen flood lights. lol!! Apart from that i can,t see a problem with the install as you have described...

If you are proposing to fit an unneccessary RCD, they'd better be buying some pretty good quality lights that don't let water in or YOU will be back and forth every time they trip.

better they trip then carry on working full up with water

you prophet of doom, you. :hanged:

Regarding the 500 watt flood lights why not recommend to them led floods a 30 watt is equivalent to a 500, try led hut.
Because if you supply the lights and put on a realistic amount it'll bump up your pay.

and throw on a free torch so they can see where the lights are.

Don't throw it, it might break it, simply pass it.
tel have you seen those floods I'm on about there pretty good actually,

i did a church with them and got there power consumption down from 8kw to 1kw and increased lumen output

thanks all for the replies,i only give them the option of a rcd i didnt tell them they had to have 1, they opted to have 1 as i look at it, it is going to make it safer especially being outside and within reach, as for it filling with water if it did i would rather it be rcd protected, probably me just being over safe but end of the day if i can make it safer i look at it as a good thing cheers

Make sure that the RCD FCU you choose, is suitable for protecting fixed wiring.
