Does anyone know if its in the regs or not about putting a female bush on the threads of a gland say when making a armoured off in a distribution board.
I was taught to Di this when I was a apprentice but it seems today's lads aren't.

i was taught to fit a female bush when using a male bush but not with an armoured gland, not sure if its in the regs or just good practice

Instead of teaching pointless installation methods like this, they should of been teaching you to fit break-outs at SWA terminations. Far more useful, especially on external terminations. ...lol!!

I've put many a female bush on my gland and I don't care about anything as long as the gland gets some bush on it....

Come on with that title you were never going to get a serious reply. I've been watching Beavis and Butthead on Visa.

Simple answer to that Cost.

Quite agree with you on that one, but at least they would know that these things exist. I bet you could count on one hand, the amount of electricians that have passed out over the last 15 years or so on this site, have ever seen a break-out fitted to a SWA cable, let alone fitted any themselves!! lol!! Come to that how many have even know what a break-out actually is?? :laugh3:

Well, you're right on both counts (well, nearly - doesn't take a genius to guess at what a break-out is likely to be). And, firmly in the belief that everyday is a school day and does us no harm....please, do share!

Never Seen one of those anywhere

You probably have, you only just have to look at any MV multi core cable feeding an overhead line, ...they will all have break-outs fitted, as part of the termination kit!! I can't remember the last time i saw a SWA cable being terminated without break-outs being fitted!! They have been called for, on virtually every major project i've ever worked on!!

As a capital project things will be specified that would never normally be used in day to day installations.

The analogy of a MV pole mount termination is totally erroneous. It has no relevance to the average LV installation. It is required, where as LV breakouts are nice to have.

If we go in to Ex environments then I will change my tune.

I was using the MV termination as an example of what a break-out looks like, as they will be totally exposed, and easy to see!! Nothing more, nothing less!! ...lol!!

Could you use those to seal one end of an SWA and present the cores if it doesn't need glanding?
