Can someone please explain why we have to cross conductors from legs of a ring to perform figure of 8 test (r1+r2 or rn+r1) and why we can't just link those conductors from the same leg as it would also make a loop... Would I be right in thinking that you would get a more even reading across both conductors when connected in figure of 8. Rather than the way I said as it would measure a much shorter distance. And would give inaccurate readings?

not only that, but by cross connecting, all your outlets should give the same value for R1+R2, unless there;s a spur off the rfc.

As tel said, easy way to locate spurs and loose connections.
If you don't connect them to opposites they will go up as you go along the ring then back down.
Like your loop readings will.
