Hi

How does everyone go about filling in the walls where chases have been made for cable drops??

Apart from a painter/decorator :D - Say for a small job consisting of few additional sockets

Deep gap filler? Plaster mix?

not that im aware of, but it is easy enough to mix. before you fill the chase paint it with a diluted pva adhesive mix and allow this to go tacky first, this will help the bonding stick.

better tip is buy the plaster board bonding adhesive and leave the bag open for a week or so.
sets solid in 20mins ,perfect for setting out boxes in hollow blocks.
always got a few bags "maturing" ready to go.
time is money.
got an open bag in my van just for this purpose, kicks ---.
if the wall is crumbling then this is the future.

Out of interest do any of you not fill chases? I got a full rewire on and I've said it doesn't include any making good and a plasterer will be needed when I'm done, obviously this is all reflected in my price. But I admit I'm no plasterer and it's not my trade, so best to pay someone who's doing it day in day out to get a better finish, as there will be a few switch drops.

Am I on my own with this? Do most of you add it into your estimate?

If it's the odd one I will do them myself

Trouble is you cant fit accessories etc till the chases are plastered,on a rewire waiting around for a spread is gonna be a hold up,one good reason to do it yourself.
Although I 'm blowing my own trumpet here my finish is as good if not better than an awful lot of spreads....been doing it for best part of thirty years.

Find it best to PVA coat the wall before skimming if using disimilar materials for filing the chases compared to the walls, otherwise you can get cracks in the skim as the skim will dry at different rates.

Mature bonding is one of the best ways to go, and completed with a skim of finish plaster. Word of caution though.... bonding sucks in moisture through the wall, so dont use vast amounts on an outside wall(particularly a solid wall) or in a bathroom or shower, damp patches might appear in the not to distant future. Best to use sand and cement in these locations and go back next day to finish skim.

Why can't you fit accessories til the chases are plastered? I've just fitted a load of new drops, chased out plasterboard, put new drops in 20mm conduit fixed to the blocks behind to keep them still for the plasterer. I suppose he might want the sockets lifting off to get a better finish up to the ends of them but for now it's all tested and in use.

well as a time served plasterer i tend to do it slightly differently,

wet the chase with water, throw some finish over all chases give it 10mins to harden up then throw some more over top and trowel down (browning bonding onecoat bah)

You answered your own question....in order to get a decent surface for the accessory to fix back to the plastering has to be to the flush box....no plasterer is going to want to remove points before plastering.
