Hi guys just need to know a couple of things about the ways about doing a fire alarm. Ive landed a job doing a fire alarm and emergency lighting in the cellar of a pub and the upstairs where they have a flat and overnight stay room accomodation. I'm not familiar with fire alarms but ive got someone coming in to do that whilst i crack on with the em lighting.

Only thing is I'm unsure about how to sign it off, Im not on a scheme yet and not familiar with the certificates either. The fella at the pub gave me the spec from the other fire alarm firms quote so I did a like for like with it so it was not designed by myself.

So how do I go about my situation properly do I have to inform local building control?

Just to put you in the picture a bit more the zone upstairs in the accomodation area is being extended and there is a new zone going in the cellar.

Cheers guys

At present a competent person can carry out works on fire alarms and copies of certificates are in the back of bs5839 if it is an existing system and you are adding to it then you need a modification certificate for the new kit you are installing, an installation certificate for any installation works ie cables but if you are unfamiliar with fire regs I'd recommend getting a specialist fire company to commission it as the whoever signs the cert could be in the dock should anything happen and the systems found to be at fault

Cheers for the info mate that helps alot. Getting a fire alarm firm to commision it is not a bad shout tho mate. How much would I be looking to pay for that?

Cheers bud
