Hi All,

I want to start getting into fire alarm installations but just wondering what courses i need to take in order the be able to design, install and commission Fire alarm syatems

i have been on the FIA website but am unsure if i need all units.

Thanks

Would suggest, installed, commissioning and maintenance are your best way forward.....after a few years, move onto design. But design comes with a need to cad drawings, which is a whole different ball game.

oh ok, so who do i get to design the job?
also what are the courses i need to take in order for me to be regulated to do this?

Thanks for your response

There is a whole lot more to fire alarm design than CAD.

There is no regulation as such for fire alarm work (obviously you should follow BS5839 and 7671). The FIA definition is you should be a competent person. So if all you are doing is maintenance, you could probably get away with unit 1 (design) and unit 5 (maintenance). If you are planning on doing service work and installation then look at unit 2,3 and 4. They are all 1 day courses and fairly intensive but very very good.

Would depend on the job...either the design would be done by the architect or the tendering fire alarm company. The is no real regulation, but being FIA & BAFE registered is recommended. Most electrical and smaller fire companies, sub a designer or cad engineer to produce drawings for approval, and final O&M

Yes there is alot more, but as a fire alarm company, if you can`t produce drawings...you don`t get the job..

For commercial buildings, it is the building occupier responsibility to carry out a fire risk assessment dictating the category/ level of system required. Quite often the building insurance company would dictate what category of system is required and also Building Control who consults with the Fire Officer.

A specialist fire alarm company or consultant would then carry out the design on this basis.

It is a specialist area but there are no specific regulations other than building regs. BS5839 is a guidance document.

Unless it a new commercial building, were the Architect would conducted the risk assessment, and would submit to BC for approval. The category would be selected by the architect upon his knowledge of the building. As most commercial buildings since the 7o`s, were fitted with fire alarm systems, designs are mainly new builds, extensions, updates and change of purpose.
