Hi Chaps

I was hoping you could clear something up for me.

My folks have a small guest house in Scotland (3 bedrooms) and the local fire officer just paid them a visit, he says they need to have the fire alarm tested every 6 months by a competent person and the emergency lights, ohh on top of the pat testing and gas boiler, but that's another matter,

Anyway getting back to the fire alarm, what would I need to do to be able to say I am a competent person and sign off the fire alarm?

I used to be Napit Full scope, I have the 2391, would I need a fire alarm qualification?

Thanks for any advice.

you can do it if you are competent. you do not need further qualifications. professional indemnity insurance would be advisable, the same as with doing EICRs.

Thanks.

Do I need to be with Napit or NICEIC?

How do I prove to the fire office that I am competent?

What do you have your qualifications for, if not to prove your competency?? Just be sure that you know what your doing when it comes to fire alarm testing, as it does come under statutory regulations, along with indemnity insurance, etc!!

By competent, the fire officer will be looking for a registered electrical contractor or fire alarm company. A self employed electrician would also come under the heading, as long as public and indemnity insurance is in place

send me your email and i will send you test certs, not sure about scotland but bs5839 says all items of fire alarm must be tested every 12 months, so thats every smoke heat interface and bells/sounders, and batteries over 5 years old should be changed,
