Hi guys (girls) i recently joined the forum and find the posts very usefull and people seem really friendly.
Abit about myself i recently qualified as a spark NVQ3 , 17th ,2391 . I have just over 4 years experiance which mainly worked on dommestic premises which included rewires, fault finding, minor works ,inspections etc. I have done some but not alot of work with em lighting and fire alarms. I recently left my job becuase i was working silly hours and call outs for £6 hour. my boss recently bought into the franchise mr electric which i hated to work for.
Anyhow i have been asked by a friend to do an electrical rewire a 3 story house HMO. I realise this will require an L2 system fire alarm. i havent done alot of work designing these so bear with me. i was thinking-
  • 2 zone fire alarm panel near entrance fed from con unit in rcbo in fp200 to a unswitched fuse spur or key switch.
  • smoke in every room ,2 landings and hallway. heat in kitchen
  • breakglass on each level
  • sounder on each level
I am not sure if this is adequate will the labc tell me what i need to do design it ? is it easy to interpret in the bs of fire alarms?what would you recommend? Also it will require emergency lighting again i havent designed these before i was thinking-

  • n/m emergency lights illuminating each of the stairs
  • n/m emergency lights illuminating exits with green man
  • n/m emegency illuminating con unit
Also with commissoning will the labc sign it off as long as i fill in the certs as i am not registered yet. help would be much appreciated thanks peeps!

You could be getting yourself a whole lot of trouble here.

Fire alarms need to be designed by a person qualified to do so, LABC will not sign off your design.

I would suggest that if you still want to install it you have somebody qualified design it, then you install to their spec and they sign it off.

As for the emergency lighting, again you need to stick to the code for emergency lighting. There are many requirements for a system, you dont want to be held responsible if for any reason it all goes wrong and the finger points.

Sorry to be negative but you need to know the consequences.

hi well i tend to put key switches for each em light depends if they local supply if i wire from consumer unit then ill put next to the fire panel a key swtich for ease of switching of if hall ways are on separate supply depends on the layout . I would stick with key switch stops people from tampering there purpose are for ease of testing units. hope that helps mate
