Discuss fire hoods or led bulbs in the Security Alarms, Door Entry and CCTV (Public) area at ElectriciansForums.net

cant be moved now, ceiling is plasterd and they know they have to use led bulbs to reduce the heat that comes off gu10 bulbs, i have learnt from my first install but theres no going back. and they are happy to use led bulbs as them gu10 blow all the time

I don't think that telling a customer they have to use the installation in an unconventional way is any kind of damage limitation because there is so much that can go wrong - you can tell the customer but what about the customer's wife and kids? And when they move do you think that telling the new owners that they have to use LED lamps in the downlighters in a certain room will be top of their list of priorities?
Maybe you think it will be OK because the customer has no plans to move, but then peoples' reason to move often arises from a situation they wouldn't like to consider - a death, divorce, financial difficulty... Again all of these reasons are likely to play on someone's mind more than the need to tell someone they have to use LED lamps in the downlighters in a certain room.

Many non technically minded people will think that something might be OK if it's only used for what they consider to be a short amount of time, particularly if it's more convenient - replacing a lamp just for one night should be OK, just the same way as it should be OK to use the socket which was put on the lighting circuit for the TV booster just for a quick 10 minutes vacuuming. When something goes wrong, anyone who looks at it will be more likely just to say a downlighter shouldn't have been put so close to the waste pipe, rather than your argument that at the time they were installed the installer told the resident at the time that they should only use a specific kind of lamp, or that while the installer was asking an internet forum for an easy solution the ceiling had been plastered making it an inconvenience to move the lights.

Cant you move the waste pipe ? If plastic surely an easrier option if you are un willing to repostion the light can a plaster board box be made to create a sheild 12 x 14 ? Then a fire rated down light with a good reflector lamp in to push the heat down. Bottom line if anything goes wrong you cant say in court you told them to use led bulbs it was they who put gu 10 halogens in, so moving the lamp would be the sensible move

cant be moved now, its just alot of heat of gu10 50W so im thinking change to led 4W, far less heat maybe flexible fire hood aswell,

any more takers on this?

have another job already , yes fitting downlights, how far do you move insulation away from downlights, ??? i was thinking of using fire rated one for this job as attic above with insulation

See if you can get halolite downlights, they do both GU10 & MR16 witch can be covered in insulation including the transformer. Hope this helps.
