Fire system installation training

Hi all, I'm looking for some help with regards to Fire system installation training. I'm currently working with a friend of mine installing addressable fire systems. I come from a mostly house bashing background but looking to add more strings to my bow. Basically I'm looking for any suggestions on courses/qualifications with regards to this field. I've looked online and there seems to be lots of different options. A nationally recognised qualification is really what I'm looking for. Many thanks in advance!

There are some F/A suppliers that run courses, some very reasonable prices if you specify their equipment, ring around and see what's on offer.

Fire Industry Association for courses/qualifications. Mind you unless you want to be a Commissioning Engineer, the install side is not rocket science. The design should always be carried out by a Qualified Engineer/Designer and all the info will be there to do the install.

Yes, some of the install aspects are quite simple. My mate hooked up the laptop to the panel and then it started getting a bit more in depth..... The commissioning side could well be something i'd be interested in.

I know channel will send out an engineer and do the design and compliance stuff, specify a parts list then you order bits from your supplier and install, they then send out a engineer to commission the system and produce certificates. Its not the cheapest option but it covers your backside and is realistic unless you are doing lots of them and can justify courses, books, insurances etc.

I would imagine there's alot more involved than hooking up a laptop, when take into account, insurances, registrations, testing, maintenance plans etc etc given a company I work for on the install side.

I suppose I want something that's going to give me a better and fuller understanding of everything involved. Yeah,we can follow drawings and specs etc, but I'm one of these who wants to fully understand if you get where I'm coming from.

I done a lot of work on systems in the 90s on the London Under Ground and recently worked in the buildings of the one of the biggest if not the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world. More to it than I released, for example, gas systems that put out fires in seconds etc etc

My mate has worked on various different systems. Aspirated, Gas systems etc. He’s worked on some new built schools and football stadiums.

Aspirated - Vesda sytems, done them as well, you also get the systems as well where the detector sits in it own enclose sampling the air at high level.

But at the end of the day I'm happy being a proper spark because fire system intaller's can't step up to do my sparky work, but I can step down and do their work if you know what I mean.

I know what you mean yes. Due to the fact I’m mostly house bashing, anything that isn’t crawling around in lofts or on my hands and knees is a bonus!!

ADT used to run courses. Carmel’s a big London company specialise in Fire/Suppression systems. MICC is making a come back too. Especially with interface loops. make sure your stripper and crimpers are ready to go!

If Domestic is your main work, then move into Fire Systems for sure.

By no means am I saying it’s a walk in the park, but I think long term it’s gonna be easier than house bashing. Physically speaking!
