I'm going to look at a rewiring job today. If I get the job it will be the first rewire I have done by myself..!
Any advice please..?

Best advice i can give is just make sure you write down everything you are going to do on the quote so that there is no grey areas after ,when they say i thought that was in the price. tell them to check quote. I have customers who think that you will replaster all the walls.
Never put sockets back to back it causes grief.

The job is a three bedroom flat roof bungalow. They are having two internal walls removed so its all 'open plan'.

I put together a really thorough 1st estimate to give them an idea of a basic rewire, white plastic, standard white pendants etc. They are now looking at what they want finish wise and the estimate will then be amended to suit.

All the advice has really got me thinking so hopefully I won't miss anything.

It will probably end up with numerous downlighters as opposed to pendants so all the more money for you.

I am just doing my first rewire after a break of 12 years, just like starting over. I brought a chasing machine and a dmoltion hammer with chisel bit. Saves loads of time, but get full face visor and ear defs on a hard hat. first day i went home nearly deff and eyes full of brickdust.
Pay someone to help. I didnt until third day and I now regret it.

Don't forget to mention smoke alarms and extractor fans in the quote.

What are the regs on smoke alarms in domestic dwellings, do they have to be hard wired..? (I'll have a look at the building regs)

As far as extractors I'm waiting for a spec of the customers requirements..

Yes..! They've indicated that they'd like a runway strip of downlighters from the kitchen through to the lounge.

If they have 12 downlighters ÂŁ60 per point seems a little high..? What is a fair price, ÂŁ35 per point..?

as you're doing a new install its best to put all heat and smokes on one interlinked circuit, bit of three core between them. there are other conditions to meet too re rcd's??? some prefer to add them to an existing lighting circuit so resident cant turn them off completetly when the battery bleeps. if it wasn't a rewire radio linked would do

Dan.

If they're asking for downlighters, don't agree until you've checked the space above the ceiling. You'll need a minimun of 100mm. With a flat roof .... it could be tight. Also, joists may mean a perfect centre-line may not be possible.

Definintely agree about getting all the cable to the position of c/u, then do dead tests on them, then remove the old c/u.

Also measure up the space for the new/cu. If the meter is too close, for example, the front opening panel won't drop down enough to see the mcbs (as i discovered to my cost once!).

Lastly, at the end of each day just sit down for a while and think about what you've done that day and how you can go on from there.

Best of luck old chap.

I did, yes. The customer still needs to decide on a spec..and they've also had a slightly unrealistic plan of having building work, plumbing work and a full rewire done before christmas..! I toldl them to rethink the time scales and explained everything that I would have to do.

I tend to use 35mm back boxes for lights and sockets now so I dont have to think too much about what type of sockets or switches are supplied. Takes slightly longer to sink but most of the time is the positioning and the first 10mm of the sink anyway.

I didnt grt any rewiring my self too but I do that 2/3 houses in a month but thems someone else get that and I work hourly. trying join with any company but I dont know how can I get it.
