fitting dimmer switches

as title really, i am replacing the two switches in my dining room with dimmers, but am not sure of the correct way to connect them? on the dimmer there is a wavy lne then an L1 and an L2, what do i connect to?

Usually common goes into L1 and switch wire goes into L2 but depend on the fitting

Is the dimmer a decorative one ie metal and does it have an earth at the switch point?

no its a plastic one, so would the wavy line be an earth connection?

The wavy line is normally the load.

the wavey line is the common/perminant live. L1 is the switch wire. It is a 2 way dimmer. Earth is connected to back box

L1 is the loop live.... The other is switched return.

just stick it in the wavey bit and l1 .. this has all got a bit complicated, leave l2 out ... it does not matter what way around either

l1 is not the loop live or common. It is the switched side. The wavey symbol is the common.
