In our experience the hanger bolt option is prefered. However with weak old slate the risk of splitting the slate increases as the diameter of the hanger is much wider than the M6 we would otherwise use. We make a call on this and go for the schuco slate hook with neoprene backing and mastic fill (thermal movement protection not water ingress as a previous poster noted) with 2-3 x M6 coach screws.

9+ years of solar installations and no leaks form this method so far!

Hanger bolts have been OK for some jobs but I just prefer the other method and to be fair if it works for you and the customer is happy then that's the main thing.

Good point about the customer being happy. We always talk the through the fixing methods at survey so if they have any objections about our method they can raise them. For the record, we would not be against using the lead flashing method it is just not something we consider necessary.

Ok I'm a total Numpty - I've forgotten how to upload an attachment. I can work out the attachment but not how to get the attachment into the attachments page. I've just been sent yet another guide about how to fix pv to slate and tiled roofs - thought some peeps might be interested.

It was the uploading bit I couldn't find to get it into the attachments. I looked in settings, my profile - I can't see the bloody thing anywhere!

After all that - the file is too big. If anyone wants it pm me with your email and I'll send it on. Basically it's the NHBC guide to solar pv, thermal and micro wind.

Hi as i have mentioned before under MCS guidelines new document draft 12 " under no circumstances are slates or any other form or tiles to be drilled and fixed with hanger bolts etc " also its against building regulations beacuse the m10 or m12 hanger bolts do not comply wiTH Eurocode 5 in fixing into roof timbers below 80mm wide. So everyone installing by drilling is non complient, please see MCS draft 12 for clarification
