Bet you can get one cheap over there m8
Excellent idea to have this bit of kit as part of your test equipment. Much cheaper than a Thermal Imager, but then your talking substantially more, ....even for a basic set-up job.

These IR thermometers are another tool in your arsenal to successful fault finding. Often when there are no visual clues as to what's going on within components and equipment, invaluable in those conditions...

Most of my own test kit, has been acquired over the years from grateful project main and sub- contractors!! ...lol!!!

The trouble here, is that you really can't tell the fakes from the real kit in many cases. Not until you have done some functional tests within the shop. Take the kit outside the shop, and it's yours forever, good or bad...lol!! And once they see a Gweilo (foreign devil) in the shop they are reluctant to sell at the same price they would sell to a Chinese...

Generally, i've found prices to be around 30 to 40% that of UK internet prices...

I got me (apologises for incorrect grammar) one of these today.

After witnessing recent events I will be adding this feature to all future PIR's/EICR's etc.

It really doesn't add much time to a report and can literally be a lifesaver if something is uncovered by it.

Anyone else already carry out this practice as the norm???

Hi Lenny I just wonder if adding this to a report you may be opening yourself up to litigation.

Once you attached your findings to a PIR say, what criteria would you use to indicate a hot spot on a panel or accessory. Are there a set of temperatures values say 60c good 120c bad, that you would work to mate.

I can see it being useful if you were using it as a comparison tool, as in a maintenance situation where you take quarterly checks on a Panel and if an area showed a marked rise in temperature from one period to the next, then investigation would be called for. For a one off check then I'm not sure.

Does the unit need to be calibrated yearly as well, again I would imagine that it would need to have some sort of check to ensure it is not giving false readings.

These are areas I'm looking into at the mo, trying to get details from manufacturers regarding maximum operating temperatures of different types of equipment & accessories etc.

Again WRT the accuracy of the thermometer, I have e-mailed fluke directly asking the same questions as you and am awaiting a response.

It is still in the early stages at the mo WRT implementing it as a working practice, but it is something I'm very keen on doing.

I think we should be recording the room / cabinet / cable temps on on PIR's and commissioning tests. Cable has a de-rating factor at high temps.
Also great at find hot spots in larger cabinets.
Would be lost without mine
Should be in every electricians tool kit

Mine came in handy again today.

Got a call first thing, factory production lights not working with a really strong burning smell.
I knew before I got there it would be a blown ballast/choke. Faced with 16 lights that all looked okay which require steps to access and MCB off as tripped, when I got there I just pointed the thermometer and one was about 40 degrees C through the diffuser and all others 22C.

So, found the faulty one in less than a minute and took the diffuser off and checked the steel plate temp and it was 62 deg C.

When light removed the ballast temp was 85 deg C.
The lights were off for 20 mins by the time I got there.
