Afternoon gents, I'm looking for a bit of advice on electronics. A family member has bought a focal point fire, in which everything works apart from the orange LEDs which light from below. When calling for fire effect it lights for a matter of seconds then goes out. When checking for voltage they then come back on. If I croc clip the led strip terminals on calling for fire effect the voltage is ever present, but LEDs still go out. I have checked components on board resistors capacitors with my meter and they are reading according to their values ,but electronics is a weakness of mine. It was bought from a catalogue and they just keep sending another fire with the same problem without taking the return. I thought I would lookin side the one which was delivered with broken glass. They all have the same fault and I'm curious how this gets past quality control.

You have it one. The components are roughly mounted on the board and the chip number isn't recognised by almighty Google. My powers of deduction and diagnosis when it comes to electronics is non existent, think I'll try and find someone local with a bit of savvy. Anyone know of a good book to maybe learn from. As long as it's not the for dummies series, tried to learn chess that way, I'm still useless.

If it's one of the ones that also gives smoke effect you may need to fill bottle under coals with water, had similar problem recently where customer hadn't done this and it was doing exactly same, on for a few seconds then off. If this is problem you need to make sure you use filtered water and it needs changing regularly and emptying when not in use

It was a stand alone fire that looked like a log burner, the daftest thing I ever seen, trying to explain to an 80 odd year old woman how to fill her electric fire with water!!
