I thought European sockets didn't have polarity so can be wired with either pin as the live and then have double pole protection at the DB?

Poland uses the CEE7/5 ('French') socket which is polarised by the earth pin, rather than 7/4 Schuko which isn't. But historically a lot of 7/5 have been wired with arbitrary polarity. Although, you would expect Poland to be quite keen on Polarity.
