Just been told that vqtraining have a limited number of train2gain (funded) NVQ's.

To qualify for train2gain funding you must NOT have a level 3 certificate already (you can be working towards this, but you cannot already have it), also must be working in the industry and have a level 2 certifcate (not compulsory though).

If interested, I would rush as they only have a few places left.

Our local college blabbing on about this also but they insist you must have an employer and not be self employed as I am, So its okay for me to employ 10 apprentices and get them all trained up but not myself??????
I am so sick of the college bull.
Our college call this WORK BASED LEARNING!!!
I dont need funding I am willing to pay for all fees myself but for some reason the college aint interested....They only want me to be employed by some electrical firm so they can bill them for whateva reason.

No, they have got in all wrong. You CAN be self employed as long as you can cover the criteria of the NVQ it does not matter if you are employed or self employed (you could even be volunteering as long as you can be proven competent in the areas by undertaking the work and meeting the criteria). Cannot understand why your college are insisting that you need to be employed, they have got it completely wrong.

When I was doing my Apprenticeship another Apprentice was technically self-employed for tax reasons and was told in no uncertain terms that this was not acceptable. How could your employer sign off your portfolio if you are self-employed?

Hi
It is not the responsibility of an employer to 'sign off a portfolio', that is the assessors job. A portfolio is built up with evidence from the workplace weather employed, self employed or a regular volunteer, you will need to be employed to carry out a full apprenticeship though.
The NVQ comes as part of an apprenticeship but for those who are practising operatives who have never completed the NVQ or have studied on an evening, they usually fund the NVQ themselves.
As sparks flying has stated VQtraining is one of these companys and has successfully gained some government funding which means for a few learners who have the right crudentials can complete the NVQ for FREE. This will require site visits from the assessors and the learner to build an online portfolio. For more information PM me and remember this NVQ end date is 30th December!

we all know that the self employed lark is rubbish. Unless you take on your own work, or work for a number of companies, then IMO then you shjopuld be employed. They make us self employed so that we have very little rights, and they can give us the boot as and when it suits them, and not have to give us holiday ect. apparently, a few years ago the Gov said that if we are employed by the same agency for more than a few weeks, then they must take us on direct. So then pay comanies come along. So we are the employed not by the agency but by these pay companies that call themselves contractors (in their legal literature). IMO this is a scam. So when i work for agencies, 9 times out of 10, i have to give one of these pay companies ÂŁ20 per week, just to process my pay, but the agency already have to process it, to pay the pay company. I think that a lot of the agencies own thepay comanies, cos they always have their preffered supplier, and they will not allow you to recive your money gross, in order to miss paying the pay company, even if you have a Ltd company.

Rant over

True, although there is normally a tax incentive to go through one of these so-called "Umbrella companies" because you can easily deduct expenses then. Although one never paid my holiday pay and didn't respond to my e-mail for several months. Their e-mail then told me that I had to put it in writing to claim my holiday pay!

RE: "Self-employment" it is really about time that they cracked down on bogus self-employment because, as you rightly say, it simply strips the employee of all employment rights.

City & Guilds have never asked for any work to be 'signed off' by an employer. The 2356 standards does not indicate this, just true reliable evidence, produced from the workplace, for an assessor to accept then an internal verifier to sign off, then the external verifier from city and guilds. Witness statements can be signed by an employer, again for the assessor to check

Fair enough. It must just be Apprentice portfolios that have that then. I presumed that the format of the portfolio was the same for anyone undertaking the NVQ but evidently I may have been mistaken.

All my evidence had to be signed off by my nominated Work Based Recorder (WBR) to prove that it was my work and that I hadn't got someone else to do it for me or bought a completed folder off someone.

In my case it was my gaffer, without his monicker on everything the tutor and assessor would not accept it.

Work-Based Recorder is right. I couldn't remember the name.

A work based recorder was thought up by quickstep, one of the original e-portfolios and is sometimes used for apprentices. This is not required by guilds. As stated before only an assessor can sign portfolio units off.
Chris apply at www.vqtrain.com for the NVQ if you wish to fund it yourself.
