I am very grateful getting an apprenticeship with the company im with now as it got me about of house bashing for another contractor i used to do works for. well not really house bashing but high end domestic. now that im on the apprenticeship all iv been doing is either watching the spark do work (metal munching) or just bolting the tray to the uni strut...

Im not allowed to do any kind of other jobs..not even allowed to use bolt cutters for basket without 'some sort of training' :eek:mg_smile:...cant even go up a small platform 2 meters high??!!!!?! the thing that grinds my teeth is on domestic i was left by the boss working from drawings and doing everything now i just watch twiddling my thumbs (there is absolutely nothing to do).

Really frustrating, and iv been put with people fresh out of school no experience whatsoever..bearing in mind i done level 2 2365 aswell..............RANT OVER

I think we all went through some sort of bad apprenticeship experience... I was often dropped in the deep end, told to wire a house with a labourer in one week or I was sacked, not a problem for any experienced but for a 1yr apprentice with no help except a tool fetch it was harrowing so steep pressured learning curves... that and been stapled for hours to stud work, greased, hung over high drop by one leg where you prayed you laces were tight...tbh the modern apprentice to so protected you can't even give em a knickname without a tribunal on yer back.. stick at it and the rewards eventually arrive.

That must have forced taught you alot though, being in the deep end aint all bad at times.sometimes i wish it was like in the older days...the actual spark that im paired with is shocked himself with the amount i am not 'allowed' to do...come on BOLT CUTTERS? TRAINING? whats to train other then put it where you wanna cut and squeeze...now i know the red tape older sparks have been banging on about.

whats wrong with people these days...I would love to be able to actually manufacture the bends and ts in tray and basket instead in this company its just ordered and bolted on..doesnt feel like a proper craftsman..sure its fast but i like to know the method of manufacturing first. back in the days did they teach you how to manufacture bends etc?

Its the way the industry is heading.. parts mass manufactured cheaply with quick delivery etc ...if I was you I would take some off cuts home and practing in your own time... say create a 30 degree dog leg as a random challange, I did it myself even back in the days, we were expected to learn off site and produce results on site so not much changed in that respect.
