I was at one yesterday,12 way dual rcd mk .shower and cooker circuits in a dp isolator off live side!? Fed off board main switch .kitchen ring split across 2 different 6A mcbs..... On and on and on.there was no way that this had been done by a sparks.least he had fitted the stickers on the lid tho.apart from the earth neutral number sticker which was fitted on the outside of the board!
it is time that b&q et all were stopped from selling items like boards because it is inherently dangerous to be messing about with this end of any install,if u don't have a clue how it's ment to be in the first place

Will you be doing the correct work?

Jesus i charge £60 to replace a board plus the cost of the board (as long as bonding and tails don't need replaced and the board is correctly labeled). Bear in mind though im still not allowed to sign off testing but when i do i can't imagine charging over £100. This takes no more than an hour for me to do, personally i find customers grumbling at that cost too.

How do you make it pay for £60? how far do you travel etc for the job. at £30ph thats only allowing 2 hours for the whole job and no travel etc....

Time for inspection prior to change?

It is this that will (or should) take a lot more time to do, if you are doing it properly, than the board change itself.

What about when you come across faults (borrowed Neutrals etal.) ?, and you cannot complete the sheets until they are rectified ?

So if you are charging £60 just to fit the board (£30 an hour ?), how do you work it out at £40 for this bit?

Also bear in mind if you are paying your own scheme fees @ circa £300-£400 a year, and your PL insurance, your cal certs etc...etc.. ad nauseum

Do you specialise in small flats?? I simply can't imagine that its feasible, or professional, to do a board change and all the mandatory dead and live tests in 2 hours.

Hi Hardwired.

If you are charging this for a CU change you are seriously under charging IMO.

I note you say your not allowed to sign off testing so how is the job finalised or does someone else come and test it for no charge?

it takes me roughly 45 minutes to swap over and i carry out the work after a quick visual inspection and test which is about 15 mins and travel comes out my pocket. in a given day i have done five or six usually this occursround about the time of b and q putting a board out at a ridiculously cheap price although the average day is 3 depending on the work i can pick up from a few guys i know.

I was thinking the same, i assume your not notifying to LABC so no costs there but even at £60 a pop and doing 3 a day its only £180 and out of that you have to get fuel, insurance (Car/Van, PL etc), wear and tear of van, all the other usual suspects.... Still cheap if you ask me. Plus I would struggle to get 3 in a day. For a start a CU change would take me about 4 hours all in, plus you dont know what else needs doing until you test and that can add time on the job and disrupt the other 2 jobs on later that day. TBH i tend to only book 1 CU change a day generally.

What are you changing, shower or garage consumer units?
