Hello, I'm having my old fuseboard replaced, had conflicting advice from two different electricians regarding the minimum insulation resistance levels that existing wiring needs to have in order to pass test - one says it's 5mega ohms, the other says its just 1mega ohm. Can anyone confirm what's the correct minimum, as I'm guessing that if it's the higher level that more wiring might need to be upgraded. Thanks a lot!

Re: Fuseboard replacement: Advice on minimum insulation resistance level for certific

funny you should mention that - we had a big discussion about this on here a few weeks back and agreed its all pants!
Well at the time, funnily enough elecsa's website went down overnight for a few days without warning or even a message on their site saying saying down for maintenance - bad practice. anyway it now appears (correct me if im wrong) that they have removed the page about a seperate fee and assessment for PIR!! phew - just saved a lot of money!!! Not that i intended on doing it but i could of certainly quite easily tagged it onto my assessment last month for the sake of it!
well thats a step in the right direction then...but it might be like the "sales" in the sofa adds......like they will be having another "sale" of PIR assessments a few weeks from now...lol.....

sorry my mistake, im sure i was either shown or read it somewhere. i bet i got confused with what you say regarding distribution circuits from same board etc. Ignore it - its late now!

Re: Fuseboard replacement: Advice on minimum insulation resistance level for certific

Sorry was talking about non 17th edition/no rcd protected boards like rewirables etc. Now that gives us the next pain of bypassing or disconn the rcd etc in a few years when it comes to more frequent PIR's on what is currently 17th edition installations- when we are on the 22nd edition and they have had a ton more cash from us!

Re: Fuseboard replacement: Advice on minimum insulation resistance level for certific

On a CU change, as opposed to a new build, I actually prefer to IR test the circuits individually, rather than a global test for a number of reasons.

a) in case there is something vunerable connected that I may have missed, such as an Alarm, aerial amplifier or central heating controls etc.

b) so I can check exactly which circuit may have deterioated or I may have problems with/need to rectify.

It does take longer to do this, but I have found it has saved me time in the long run.

Each to their own.
