G59 questions

Hi

We have been quoting on a 250kWp install and another company (which is also quoting) has done the G59 application. This was refused as the local network can only take a 50kWp install. We have re-quoted for 50kWp, other companies have told the client that they can still install 250kWp as they will be using almost all the power on site.

My understanding is that the DNO do not take this into account and that there is no way that you can limit what goes to the grid, to a maximum of 50kWp on a 250kWp system and still comply with the DNO, has anyone any experience on this or know where I can get some info to show the client?

Thanks

Tom

Tom - it's entirely feasible to limit the export within the design of the G59/2 protection enclosure. It's not particularly practical but if the reality is that the net export is hardly likely to exceed 50kW then it can be done with minimal consequence/impact to the PV system. There are a couple of ways to do it, depending on the inverters and also depending on "ideal" client requirements. Happy to discuss with you if you wish.

Hi pvman. As far as I know the only DNO approved (and I'm assuming you're talking SPEN given your location) way to limit export is with EMMA. The downside is you need somewhere for the "excess" to go, so 200kW in this case. A tank of immersion heaters is usually cheapest and presents the most potential uses on site...unless of course most of the generated energy is likely to be used on site already, in which case it'll sit there cold.

This solution works - but it is not cheap.

PM me if you want more info or a chat to see if I can point you in the right direction.

@pvman, There are a number of solutions which would allow you to limit export - it is standard practice in Germany, in the UK we'd use different technology to do it, though it is still entirely feasible to install a 250kWp system and limit the export to 50kWp.

Both Andy and Ken are highly experienced individuals in this area and you won't get better advice from anyone else. - Give them both a call and listen to them :)

Thank you everyone for your help, we have spoken with Andy from Sibert as we have an account with them.

We had a similar issue with a 150kw install recently. SSE told us we couldnt put in 150kw as the grid couldnt take it. However they accepted our claim they would use it on site and also accepted the method we used for limiting the export to 50kw. So just to let you know the SSE do consider it. Also, it wasnt an EMMA we used to limit export.
