HI all i fit solar panels for a company and he was asking me what the difference between a g59 and a g83 connection . is this something that can be changed in inverter? what is the diference and why would you use either one or is it something that your electricity supplier has to do?

employer. he hasnt fitted any g59 just al g83 but was wandering and for my own personal interest what was required and why

G59 is a tighter set of limits, that is more geared to disconnection of paralleling equipment that has more chance of inducing significant faults on the grid if It goes wrong. This is in addition to the need to protect grid guys from working on what they think is 'dead' equipment.

G83 is up 16a per phase
G59 is above 16a per phase
After that I think it's g75, for HV kit over 50 megawatt

so if its a g59 connection can whatever it is be changed at inverter or would suppliers change something at their side and any ideas of cost

danfoss tlx's are both registered as g59 and g83 compliant, so <11.6 kw systems installed on 3 phase meters dont require g59 apps as the amps per phase <16amps

so just to clarify most installs above 16amp require a g59 application or 3phase as long as not more than 16 amps across each phase is ok . do suppliers charge you for g59 connection? do they have to do anything on their side to protect their grid workrs? cheers guys

G59 actually have a looser set of limits - an inverter set to G83 settings has stricter limits than a set of relays that it is connected to. Therefore the G83 inverter would need reconfiguring.

G83 doesnt look at phase angle or rocof?

In any event, they're different, and not interchangeable.

If your install is g59 size, the DNO will want to witness.

on monday im installing a 6.5kw system with 26 panels so should this be a g59 connection?

the guy im doing this for seems to think that it is a g83 . im led to believe that any single phase system over 16a should be considered as a g59 connection and dno should be notified howver hes adamant that its not g59 and is g83.

slightly worried by conversation/ lack of knowledge!! UR BOSS SHUD KNOW THIS STUFF!! and have sought prior permission from DNO?

Unless the guy you are working for has had some special permission from the dno, it's got to go it with g59 protection and settings.

well maybe the inverter has the settings on it? . surely if the inverter is for that size of system it would be a g59 compliant? as far as i know he spoke to dno and they said g83 is fine. I couldnt see how it would be however so I was the one who queried it as i understood it to be anythin over 16amp would be g59 .
