Galv conduit help please

Good evening everyone

Can any help or give me some advice please on measuring bending galv conduit.

My question is bending long 3m lengths.
Say for example you need to bend a full length. 400 mm to back of bend. If you insert measured end first into the former obviously you can bend it to 90 degree due to length!
If I do it upside down the long length hits the ceiling if you insert measured end in first!

Hope this makes sense but can anyone explain how you bend this example please? Surely there must be a way of measuring by inserting opposite end into former first?

Get a bit of scrap conduit, mark it at 400mm, put it in the bender with the mark lined up with the back of the former and the 400mm sticking forwards.
Pull a 90 degree bend in it and then accurately measure the distance from the back of the bend to the end of the conduit.
Subtract this new measurement from your original 400mm and that is the amount you need to add on to the 400mm to get the bend you want.

Hi Dave thanks for this. Sorry for stupid question but assume you mean the measured point from goes into former first?

If you mean the conduits hitting the floor before it reaches a right angle then make the bend by pulling the bar up, instead of down. If it hits the ceiling find a room with a higher ceiling. One thing to remember with conduit is it's all about the angle of the dangle; remember that and you cant go far wrong !

Can anyone explain what mark back distance means when bending. Saw somewhere about it being 2.5 x the conduit diameter!?

As Davesparks says find an off cut and mark it 400mm from one end; line up this mark to any reference point on the former (can be the back of the former or simply a mark on the former; it doesn't matter where as this is just a reference point aka datum point). Pull the bend, take it out and measure from back of bend to end of conduit. Its unlikely it will be 400mm; however this measurement will determine how much you need to add or subtract from the 400 mark to obtain your desired measurement. So, with this is mind, on the conduit you wish to fabricate, mark 400 from the end, plus or minus the measurement determined on the scrap piece, align this new mark with the datum point and pull the bend. Its should be 400 to back of bend in this instance. A bit long winded explanation but that's about it.
