Hi ya!

I have run a supply out to the garage 6mm armoured protected by a 40a mcb and 30 m/a rcd.

The customer did not want to buy a new board for the garage. So I didn't see why I couldn't put up his old rewirable board since it's supply is rcd protected. We got a ring circuit and a lighting circuit in the garage.
I have an isolate before opening sticker and made sure the the incoming terminals have those plastic covers over them.

Have I missed anything?

I hope that the run is not overly long as a 40amp protection device on a 6mm SWA is not leaving much leeway

On the Tender Loving Care site you can pick up a small 2 way board which as a 30mA RCD and a 6amp and 32 amp MCB for 24 pounds Ex VAT. If you used this then you would be fitting the RCD local to the Installation and be able to have the SWA on a non protected circuit, or a 100mA RCD if it was a TT system. This way you would not be tripping the house if there was a fault in the garage, and not having to trudge back to the house to reset.

Ah it's only about 10m- 15m away. It seemed alright with the calculations. It a three core so The earth is a 6mm as well

If it's a new installation the board must comply to curent regs. If it's the wooden backed type then it won't.

It's plastic. Would that be ok? As it goes with the nuisance tripping. I would hope there would be no earth faults! It should be looked at immediately if there was.

No there may not be an earth fault now but what if you were in that garage in mid november and plugged in a heater, which had a little bit of dampness in it, and it tripped the RCD in the house. You are 15mts away in pitch black, the house circuits that cover that RCD is now also off, while the wife was watching Eastenders, and your stumbling back in the dark with the wife giving you Jip trying to reset an RCD ...................

and your stumbling back in the dark with the wife giving you Jip trying to reset an RCD ..

"I told you to buy a high integrity board" she will say angrily
"You should have known all this before you fitted the damn thing"she shouts,as the door slams shut in your face
"Dont you know anything about discrimination" she muttered

Love the story DES!! I'll talk to him n get it on it's own circuit but I suppose there is nothing technically wrong with it. Alas! The rewirable, it is a vintage beauty!
