Garage Junction Query

Hi all,

recently moved into new house and was looking in garage which currently has 1 strip light with the wire from the house entering the garage into the light then another wire comes out the light and down to a switch.

Is this normal??

and is it possible to put a junction box into the wire from the house to power a socket?

yes that sounds ok, anmd no you shouldnt put a socket outlet on that circuit, as the cable wont be able to take the required current for a socket outlet

next question, can i run a cable from an existing socket in kitchen to socket in garage or totally remove kitchen socket as its spare and never used and joint the cable and run to new socket ?

how many cables in the redundant socket? you could spur off in 2.5mm to one socket, but only one. if more thasn one required in garage, you should continue the ring out and back

you can spur off any socket that is not a spur itself, unless you use a fused spur. Idont know if extensions to a circuit are notifiable, but if they arem, then you will have to engage the services of a qualified and registered electrician

There are 2 3core cables.

that indicates that that socket is not a spur, so you can spur from that. Have you got RCD protection in your fuseboard?

ok, as i said, you can run a spur in 2.5mm to garage socket, but you're only allowerd one socket on an unfused spur. it's debateable whether it's notifiable or not, as johnboy says

I dont think so John the board is original from late 80s and doesnt have small trip switches just 5 large fuses if that makes sense??

yeah that makes sense mate. In my opinion, the new spur should be protected by an RCD, that either covers the whole circuit, or by an RCD spur.

Ok John lets see if this is ok in your opinion,

1.take out existing socket and put in 4 terminal junction box to accomidate 2 existing socket cables, the new garage cable and a cable to the socket.

2. replace socket and run 2.5 twin and earth to the garage and fit a 2G DP RCD socket.

Is this ok and safe or is it better to remove kitchen socket altogether and just put 3 terminal junction box in.?

suggest you get a qualified sparks in as you really need to update that old board, but if you are going to fit a socket in the garage, it must be RCD protected. as long as your new cable is not buried in plaster, less than 50mm below surface. you can fit an RCD socket. job done.

Cheers Telectrix will look at geting panel updated soon. Iam planning on running the 2.5 within cavity wall and then in garage it will be fastened to brickwork, not 100% sure if thats what you are asking?

easiest way is to leave existing socket in place and spur off in 2.5mm to RCD socket
