hi i am new to this and dont know who to ask about a problem i have

i have a small private job to supply a out house (very small garage) which is less than 10m from the back of the house but its a terrace and the consumer unit is at the front rather than have a cable routing throug the house could i spur off with an un switched 13amp fuse spur from the nearest socket (ring)with a 4mm swa cable to supply a garage fuse board which will supply 4 gu10 down lights and a couple of sockets.

let me know cheers

When you say private job, do you mean cash in hand and ignoring Part P?

no i work as an electrical contractor for a firm monday to friday, i am niceic approved and this job is for a friend so payment would probably be a curry and beer.

In which case you should know the answer and I'd be expecting many curries and beers for this work. Plus if you're employed do you have NICEIC status in your own right?

i am a sub contractor and work in commercial and industural setting so house jobs are small fry for me i know i could use a RCDFCU i just thought someone else would have a better answer is all, do you???

The parts lol just so you know the out house (not garage) used to be a victorian crapper which has been converted into a husband retreat so it will have a tv a mini fridge and a small kitchenette and probably a sofabed knowing his wife he will be spending alot of time there.

hang fire a minute...you say at #3 your an `approved contractor` (and i aint holdin that in high esteem)...your an approved contractor (#3)....and you ask this?....
eh?

as i said in #5 house work is not my usual i am not a domestic installer i am an approved contractor ok? and i know i can use a RCDFCU so i was hoping you lot with house experience and knowledge would have a better answer rather than --- for tat waste of time replies!

right...
normal practice for a garage feed would be to run an armoured (size VD and Ib/In depending) off ov an unprotected way (earthing arrangements pending)...then give it additional protection downstream...
firstly. this isn`t viable as you have pointed out at #1 ...so.....
go for the 13a..fused outlet (unswitched)....if no additional protection by means of RCD is provided at the supply....then use an armoured and RCD it downstream......however if the install`s means of earthing is TT (rod/s) then the cable will need to be given RCD for fault protection....a 4mm CSA armoured seems a little large though considering that only 13A will be available (given length of run for VD of course)....
but i reckon an `approved contractor` would know this ......of course..
take care yackov....please....
