Hi, Im laying a cable under the garden path which goes to the garage...

The garage is away from the path and im using 6mm Armoured cable, the customer has asked if it really needs to be buried 18" under the ground as theres a main drain there and that would mean going underneath it.

He has asked if he can run an over head rail across from the house to the garage, I told him that im 90% sure it cant be done and it has to go under the ground, can anyone shed some light on this?

There are no regulations on how deep an underground cable needs to be...the often quoted 18" is a myth. The important thing is it must be deep enough to be out of the way of likely disturbance/cultivation.use common sense or put it in a duct for protection. There is no reason why it cant be overhead as long as it is properly supported on a strainer and high enough to be out of harms way.

Here's a nice bit of T+E going from a jb on the wall you can see coming from the c/u to the garage, from there its swa feeding a summer house at the end of the garden.

As the T+E leaves the kitchen and passes the extention towards the garage its just hanging in mid air and gets clipped by the top of the metal frame gate each time it opens then enters the concrete garage via the gap in the roof.

Another job on the list at the inlaws.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I dont think you really answered my question, Im not bothered about the depth as such, i just wanted to make sure there was no other way of doing it, does it actually have to go underground?

The picture shows a very similar situation, so if your gonna ungrade this cable run, are you gonna put it in amoured cable under the ground?

Im not sure i can put it overhead, the house is only 1 story high on that side, like a dutch bungalow.
- i would ave thought that "placing out of reach" means more than 3m high, under the domestic regs, but i'll not be able to put this up that high, so im guessing I cant really do much more?

does anyone know of the 3m out of reach rule? i dont have my regs with me, Thanks

wat i'm guna do is replace the t+e with swa, tack a swa to the wall about 1.5 feet and then as it passes the gateway I'll lay it at the floor as its covered by decking, then I've gota either try & drill through the bottom courner of the concrete garage or take it back up through the roof space again (which I don't wana do), as I'd rather hide the wire than expose it.

I don't no of a building reg that would prevent you from running it over head provided it was suitably supported as said by wirepuller. Its more to do with what the customer wants, I certainly wouldn't suggest putting it on a fence. btw the driveway is concrete in the pic too so I can't berry the wire, and if i could i'd put it at least 1 foot deep possibly 1.5 to prevent peps digging it up or stabbing it and yes I have mental block on the right way of spelling berry at this time :- )
