Is it me or is our trade a complete shambles when it comes to regulation compared to plumbers. They are either gas safe (or the old corgi) or they arent. This is a nationwide recognised body, their symbol is recognisable and as a member of joe public I would always hire a gas safe plumber.

Right on to electrics, NIC, Elecsa, Napit etc etc, domestic installer, approved contractor, eca, jib card, 17th edition, part p, bs7671, numerous logo's, none recognisable to joe public.

We are on a hiding to nothing!

You are bang on the money there mate.
it is about time the electrical industry followed a similar path, and had one recognised body, the electrical equivalent to Gas Safe.
This should be made compulsory for anyone wishing to carry out electrical work, and then it is up to the individual if they want to join any extra schemes that part you of your hard earned cash such as NIC e.t.c

Yes thats a start at least, with gas safe the name gives it away that they are safe to work with gas, but with us we have NICEIC or NAPIT written on a van, that tells customers nothing. Like you say this electrical safety register may help towards this

You aren't doing a direct comparison.
You're comparing Electrical work to Gas work, what about all the plumbing and heating( non gas work), that's the same shambles as electrical with fast tracks and non qualified people working at it.
Gassafe applies to a small section of Plumbing and heating.

Something along the lines of Electrisafe would be good but very difficult to get started, Corgi / Gassafe took years before it became manditary.
There is talk of something like Watersafe for all the waterside of plumbing coming into being, if that happens Sparkies won't be allowed to connect up the water side of showers.

Won't be allowed to connect showers? Never going to happen I'm afraid. And besides part p means kitchen and bathroom fitters can't do electrical work, look how that turned out....

Yeah just to make it easier there's now also the elecsafe register and the electrical safety register

lol I can't help but think of month python....judean people's front.....people's front of judea.......what a carry on!

I quoted for a job for the council and out of the 3 quotes I was the only one not NICEIC registered, so they thought I was some cowboy with some firm called ELECSA........very frustrating!!

Yes my local council specify nic only, not sure where this would stand legally though, im sure the ECA would have something to say about it

Contact ECA/ELECSA and give them all the details, they will get their lawyers involved on your behalf, most councils confronted in this way suddenly "see the light" and amend their NICEIC only policy. Don't put up with the "cartel of left handed brickies" and make your annual subscription work for you!

Yea it is, I wire them up and my Dad the Plumber does his bit! So what about if your putting in a new shower you do all the pipework? If we stick to our own trades then everyone is happy!
I know where you're coming from but, lets face it , plumbing a shower ain't never going to hurt anyone. No design,no cert and no danger
