now, you can get gas irons that are used for stained glasswork...:

I'd only use them for rough stuff, like Marvo said the temperature can be unpredictable. Prefer a battery one for rough stuff anyway, got one for using solder as a heat trip, there's not sockets on this machine. At the end of the the day, nothing beats your standard soldering iron in my opinion.
 
Ive got a portasol and an iroda, both good but you cant go wrong with a portadol. Good temperature control, large gas capacity and lots of interchangeable tips.

I use mine daily for socapex plugs, xlr panels, jacks etc. No matter what a mains iron is always better however my portasol is a close second. The only major downside is the 'exhaust'. Had a couple of nasty burns off that bad boy!
