Generator as main supply

Hi all

I have been to look at a job today where the customer has 1 small shed and 1 larger outbuilding.

The customer is planning on running this by a 5KV generator which is already on site.
reason being for the generator is the the main supply is miles away and they have been quoted thousands.

They are looking for 6 NCF 2x70w lights in the main area with 2 sockets.

Whats the best way of earthing this, treat as a tt supply and spike it?

a 5kv genny
dont u mean a 5kva? with a cos of ,08
its seems far too large for the supply of 6 twin fluos and a couple of 13a sockets
a 2kva would be cheaper to run especially on diesel or gas, but what do i know

I think that you could be under cooking it a bit there Ajay , with 2kva you would have no scope to use much more than a small drill if that .


Edit ; Now i have had a few so !!! But by my reaconing 2kva gives you just shy of 11 amps and those lights will be looking for just over 3 amps on their own giveing just around 7.5 amps for any other gear .

yes a cosine of 0.8 give 20% less power so 1000watts becomes 800
the genny proposed is far too big imo
it will be wasting fuel big time

Check if the neutral is tied to the earth on the genny, a lot of the small (hobby) generators don't.

We had a new 120kva one supplied for a mobile grain drier earlier in the season that had no N-E link as standard , we ended up having to make one up our selfs as the suppliers did not keep that part in stock !!!?

well I've read one post where they linked N-E at the ccu making it tncs.

i don't like the whole idea personally as its a dam noisy thing but i guess they are saving a lot of money
