Getting 240 on a socket but nothin work when I plug sumit in

Hiya guys

Been looking at my friends house today because his sockets aren't working. I havn't done any electrics for like 3 years, so I'm a bit rusty. hope u can help.

From what I can gather, the ring main has been split at some point in time, and one of the legs has now occurred a fault.

What's puzzling me is 2 of the sockets up stairs have 240v between L & N but when I plug something in, i'm not getting no joy. Am I missing something, or am I plain thick.

Before u ask, I know what some of you are like, I do have my 17th + update

Just sounds like a bad connection at the back of on one of the sockets downstream of the power loss.

Hi Luke, did you test the socket from the front at the plug end or at the cables in the back, could it be a faulty socket?

You can have a connection goood enough for a meter or tester to read, but not good enough with a load on.

and when you've found the bad connection ( might be on the neutral, don't forget) check and ensure that the OCPDs have been downrated to allow for it now being 2 radials.

If you are getting 240v across the terminals problem is with either the switch(if one is fitted) or the connections where the plug touches.

As previously said for the cost just change it.
