Getting in to the trade?

Hi all!
I'm looking for some advice about retraining and getting into the trade, particularly from people who are in a similar situation or thoes who have been there and done it. I have seen that a local colege has a EAL Level 3 installation inspection, testing, certification evening course as well as other companies offering part P and 18th edition courses. would these be a good place to start before looking for a job as an electricians mate? can anyone reecomend any other courses or traning providers, especialy in the south wales area?

I know that I can go the access to training route but there are mixed reviews. Has anyone done an access to training course and have you had any success with finind a job afterword or are employers put off by the lack of practical experiance? I dont want to pay the money for a course just to be told that I dont have the experiance as I'd probably say traing as a sparky is mostly practical.

Ive got no issue starting from the bottom and working my way up, would just like some advice and a point in the right direction.

me ,if was to start again ,plumber/heating engineer,for you to start to train to be a spark ,you will need time and monies ,before you start putting monies in the become a spark ,you might start training to be sparks mate ,and go for thier .

Best way is to try and get an apprenticeship and get the company to pay for it ,but if your an adult trainee the company has to pay you more in Scotland anyway so less inclined to take you on.most first year apprentices are dogs bodies for the first year at least so be prepared for that but because your older and wiser you'll catch on quicker and not day dream about meeting your mates that night

If I had it all over again I would have went for plumbing/heating .but to be honest you take the good with the bad.its not the work it's people /customers who ruin a good trade.and other trades wandering why its taken you a whole day to fit 3 downlights and an inline fan in a bathroom

correct on that score ,you put in a price ,some customers thinking I'm not paying that price ,bloody hell my cars broken down ,they dont complain when they get the bill.
come in a couple of months their is going to be trades man picking up the p45.
any way the builders will be asking for people to build house of straw house of wood house of mud.

Exactly and they have to pay there bill there and then but it seems to be taken as standard that trades can be paid when customer chooses .I put a 2 week deadline on invoice.to be honest if its a private job most folk except to pay ASAP but companies please themselves .

If you did start with a company you wouldn't be doing any inspection and testing unless you were under supervision and even then you would learn far more on site from an experienced electrician .100 percent the best way to go about it is to find a company who will employ you from scratch.times change when I was younger all you had to do was a simple aptitude test ,basics maths and English and then your name was entered into a list of potential candidates for companies to see.its probably changed now.if you new anyone who worked in the trade that could be a way to get your name banded around .there's plenty of sparkys who are up to there eyes in work who might jump at the chance to give someone a start .Good luck anyway

That's for the reply guys. Apprenticeships seem to be few and far between these days. I emailed round a load of companies to see if there are any electrician's mate jobs going. I have no problem funding courses myself. I just know I need to get my foot in the door somewhere. But as you was saying about having your time over. There's good and bad in every job

I feel really sorry for anyone getting into a trade now and electrical seems to be the worst ,to many one man /women bands who can't afford to take on an apprentice or can't be bothered with the hassle.if you were up my neck of the woods I'm almost certainly I could get you in with a small family company at least for a trial period .you might not be doing electrical works to start with but once you proved yourself and were keen you would be a shoe in .

Yea there doesn't seem to be many apprenticeship around, I asked a plumber mate of mine out of curiosity if he was taking on an apprentice and he said there's no point. I have emailed a load of local companies about a mate's job but had no responses. I'm starting a level 3 inspection and testing course with a local college in March so hopefully that will put me in better sted, even if I just volunteer part time for time being just to get the experience.
