Getting into a resin filled joint

Hi all,

Couldn't find existing thread on this.

Need to get into a large resin filled joint on a 120mm 4 core SWA and wanted to know if there was a solution to dissolve it or is it a case of hammer and chisel like the old days. It is a cold cured, two part resin Kit from CTC.

Any help appreciated.

Might be a bad idea mate. Depends on melting temp and what the resin is made of. If there is little air pockets in it, like cement, then it could explode a bit.

Wear the correct PPE and you should be OK

Do you actually need to dissect the joint? Is there a space restriction etc? If not 2 joints and a piece of cable to allow the joint to cut out would be easier and the time saved would pay for the extra joint.

Assuming it's some kinda cross linked polyethylene you do get a conformal coatings strippers which is basically a polar solvent as far as I know so MEK or acetone should work. The solvents aren't pleasant to work with and are carcinogenic so use appropriate PPC. Also it's likely to take time....lots of time, I've un-potted smaller things in the past like control boards and solvent penetration is very slow, it's taken days of soaking and agitating. Solvents are also likely to destroy the original cable insulation so as already suggested above you'd probably be better remaking entirely with 2 joints or even the hammer and chisel as you mentioned in the OP.
