Glorious Artex

Hi all

probabily a common topic but iv been out to quote a job and it involves 10 downlighters in an artex ceiling which is going to have a plastic ceiling below. I understand artex has asbestos in so what am I supposed to do? Get someone in to test it or? The house is probably 30 years old possibly slightly younger. Worried the hell out of me.

Probably true .. she's a clumsy tart.

She's the only lass I know who can turn a simple shopping trip to Tesco into a demolition derby. Within five minutes the Tannoys are blaring "Store cleaner to aisles four, five and seven please!!" and it sort of degenerates further as time progresses ........

Have you addressed any issue with a plastic ceiling and the bunsen burner lights or are they led ?

Personally I would be concerned to such an extent, about working with an artex ceiling, that I would have great difficulty remembering the fact
Of course,once I am reminded I would take all necessary precautions

My NBC suit,Gas mask and double shield goggles would have to be worn and the householder kept at a safe distance

Joking aside,you may have to take reasonable precaution
I know of someones rewire job that was carried out where a suspected asbestos ceiling was cut,the council became involved because the dust was over the furniture etc, there were compensation claims

Pah!! What a bunch of wusses you all are!

My hallway, staircase and landing were "Artexed" - very badly - so I simply set number one son ( the bent one that I don't like ) onto it with a steam wallpaper stripper and scraper and shut the door.

Three days later it was all off ready for the plasterer to skim the walls.

With anything like that,the householder could be more of a problem than the Artex,lets say that he/she is aware of the potential problems with artex,they could potentially let you start the job then start screaming asbestos and you get hit with a big claim.It sounds extreme but some people will do anything to make a claim.

use a dust collector over your holesaw. wear a dust mask as well. alternatively , get an oldish bloke to do it. asbestos problems take around 30 years to cause illness , so if you get a 60 year old to do the drilling, chances are he'll be worm fodder long before he starts coughing. ( p.s. i fit into that category, £80/hour OK.?)

Henry? Pfft, I'd say Hetty - she's more of a looker.

OP - Whats the situation with the lighting on the Artex - if its possible to use them 'click-plug in celing jobby methingys'(hope that makes sense haha, i know what i mean) then i'd be entitled to do that and have flex coming down for the fittings in the plastic ceiling. Then leave it up to whoever is installing the ceiling to worry about cutting the artex.

As regards to the plastic ceiling make sure you install LED's otherwise the risk of a fire is more of a concern than the asbestos.

Also, i doubt the homeowner will want the asbestos removed safely when she discovers the cost of it. Tricky situation really, i suppose you could note it down on the cert even though its nothing to do with electrics...maybe? lol.

As already said, a dust cover for the hole saw, a P3 mask and a dust sheet. My only addition would be to make sure that you use a sharp holesaw, not one of the cheapo ones you get in the wholesalers, a proper one from Bosch! Secondly, with a sharp holesaw you can then drill slowly with light pressure, the dust will then fall gently collecting neatly in your cover instead of spraying out the side of it.

This is the real world, if you had to get the biohazard team in every time you made a hole in an artexed ceiling you'd never get any work done. Also, it is a bit of a grey area, but the law allows for 'light' drilling in asbestos covered walls and ceilings so long as it isn't blue or brown asbestos, I guess the words 'light drilling' could be open to interpretation. And anyway, artex has very little real asbestos in it and it is of the sort that does very little damage. It aint nuffin like that pipe lagging I like to bash about with!

not that difficult to teach a geordie. there's only a few words for beer, smokes and sex. anything else is irrelevant .
