Got a little project:

Got a customer who's wife keeps hitting the back wall of the garage whilst reversing the car in.
the old tennis ball trick does not stop her from hitting the back wall.

Now my project is to get a beam sensor looking across the garage (bumper height) when the beam is broken there will be a light in front of her on a wall as the car is reversing (beam broken) the light will flash and as soon as the car has cleared the garage door the light with go solid.

Some of the jobs we get!!!

Gonna start looking around for 230v sensors so that I have not got to bother with trannys.

use a 12 power supply as in alarm systems, then you can use all 12v gear which is cheap as chips. IR send/receive goes o/c when beam is broken. use a relay to light 12v or 230v lamp. alternatively, teach her to drive.

I did advise that

But

The other issue is she is now scared of the rear wall and parks to far forward. She gets out of the car and realises the garage door won't shut so has to get in again.
She does not have good clutch control and reverses straight into the wall.

There is something already on the market like this.

A few years ago, I was working in a customer's garage & saw a box with a green & red lamp in it fitted to the back wall of the garage. I remember it had a manufacturer's name on it, but can't remember what the name was.

I asked the customer what it was for & he told me it was so his wife wouldn't drive into the wall !!

Kinda scary for people living in the area using the same roads.

I would just knock something up using standard 'off the shelf' alarm components and a cheap 12v power supply. If you're handy with a soldering iron and assuming you live near a Maplin outlet, you should be able to make the whole thing up for a few quid.

Suggestions:
  1. Bolt a length of timber (eg 4x2) to floor, positioned for her rear wheels to stop against.
  2. Make a mark on inside of driver's door and another on garage wall. She can stop when they are aligned.

She can drive, she just can't park.

I like Dougs idea but let's spice it up a bit. How about instead of using a 2x4 you get all of her favorite shoes and handbags and place them at the required distance from the back of the garage. Bet you that she'll never hit that wall ever again :)
