Granny charger

A quick advice for a mate.

He has an elect car but can not afford to put in an EV charger at home atm. The public chargers are costing 5 times more to charge !

Are granny chargers reliable ? Where he can just plug his 50kwh on a lead with a 13a plug which will be plugged into a socket .

Thanks for any input

I would suggest that part of affording an EV would be affording an EVSE. Granny charging is not a good solution. With all the money he will be saving surely a proper EVSE is an essential investment.

Most cars come with a granny charger.
If they are not using its full range daily then it will be fine
They re normally about 2 or 2.5kw so a full charge will take about 24h
If he is only topping up daily from about 50% to 80% then that could easily be done overnight.

A decent charger costs about £500 plus fitting.

I have a Leaf with 40kwh battery, i use a variable charge rate between 6Amps to 27 amps, i often use the lowest setting and leave overnight. If the granny is fixed set to 10amps or 13amps then the socket would need to be in really good condition. Some chargers contain a temp sensor in the plug which can massively reduce the charge rate. I just use a 32A commando socket in the garage and plug in the charger, i can also take the charger with me and plug into a 13A regular socket. Leaf has an in built 6KW charger so can never reach 32Amps.

Vehicles don't tend to be supplied with a granny lead anymore as they don't wish to encourage their use. It's almost always an aftermarket purchase these days. It will just be supplied with a Type 2 lead.

It MUST NOT be set to 13A. 10A is the limit for granny charging as this causes a sustained load on the BS 1363 socket-outlet. They generally all should contain temperature sensing nowadays.

BS1363 does not appear to support this view, although i dont recommend it personally as the condition of plugs and sockets appear to be manufactured "cheaply" and their condition, from my experience, is often not "perfect" - i can see no reason to rule out its use in this country.
